By Jake Beckert, Rosh Eidah of Chalutzim

Chalutzim has started off with a bang, lots of sunshine, and of course Rak Ivrit (only Hebrew)!

From the moment the chanichim (campers) arrived they have been talked to exclusively in Rak Ivrit by their madrichim (counselors). The chanichim have risen spectacularly to the challenge, and are already making tremendous strides in their Ivrit.

IMG_1443To encourage our chanichim to speak as much Hebrew as possible we have started a Hebrew Olympics. Each day we ask each a chanichMi Rotzeh Lidaber Rak Ivrit Hayom?” (who wants to speak only Hebrew today?) Every chanich who volunteers is given a sticker to symbolize their participation. Prizes are given for chanichim and tzrifim (cabins) that speak the most Hebrew. This week tzrif Jerusalem has been given the prize for speaking the most Ivrit, and will get to have a special breakfast on a pontoon!

Another special thing going on in Chalutzim is sicha (discussion) groups. This is one of the only times each day where campers are allowed to talk in English. The discussion groups are on all sorts of different topics from what Judaism says about nature, to Jewish athletes.

One of the sichot groups, leadership, thought of a fantastic idea to improve camp unity. They suggested that on Shabbat lunch we should all sit together as an entire camp, instead of by eidot (units). They brought the idea to Jerry, and he agreed that it was a great idea! So this Shabbat, thanks to Chalutzim leadership, the whole camp got to sit together for a picnic lunch.

Next week promises to have a lot of exciting and different days as we will be having our first erev tzrif (cabin nights) all camp Maccabiah games (sports competitions) and of course, lots and lots more Ivrit!
