Building Community Pre-Camp

At OSRUI everything we do is in service of building a Kehillah Kedosha (a holy community). We don’t just build this community for 12 weeks each summer in Oconomowoc. The OSRUI community lasts all year long in our homes and in our hometown communities. Here are a few ways we think about community building outside our gates:

Our family welcome squad just finished calling to welcome all first-time new camper families. Making this connection between veteran and families and new families strengthens our generational camp bonds and helps new families get ready for camp.

“It was so nice to be able to connect with another parent who lives in our area and sends their kids to camp.”

” The personal connections made through the family welcome squad definitely helped ease my fears of sending my child to camp for the first time.  The family welcome squad caller was able to answer all my questions.”

The OSRUI Parents Facebook page is a great community building environment. This online space serves are a place where parents connect with each other, ask questions and arrange pre-camp meet-ups. It is also an easy way to see reminders from camp about online events, summer forms, and more. If you’re not in this group, we encourage you to join and introduce yourself! This page is open ONLY for current OSRUI parents, which helps us build community amongst the parents who are currently sending kids to camp – creating a more intimate space to share thoughts and questions.

Join us for a virtual event. Camp has been hosting several virtual events, to get to know the camp staff, culture, and community. At the end of March, we hosted a Town Hall & a Folk Night/Havdalah. We loved see families engage with camp both for formal questions around summer program and safety, but also to join in song and chat with friends. Stay tuned for more opportunities to connect virtually before the first day of camp.

We are constantly in touch with all of our congregational partners. We are so thankful that we have many campers join us year after year with clergy and educators from many of the Midwest synagogues we serve. If you belong to a congregation affiliated with camp, they can be a great partner to connect you with local camp families.
