URJ Olin-Sang-Ruby-Union Institute (OSRUI) Outdoor Center offers a rich environment for adventure education, outdoor education, and teambuilding experiences for student and adult groups. The 200 scenic acres of nature located on Lac La Belle Lake in Oconomowoc, WI, are a perfect backdrop for discovery learning. OSRUI Outdoor Center runs programming fall, spring, and winter. Our professional staff are dedicated to making your participants’ experience memorable!

owl on branchOur programs are designed to emphasize and build awareness of ecological principles. These programs are experiential based, meaning students learn by doing. Experiencing the environment through our hands-on activities helps to reinforce topics learned in the classroom. It also provides students with a break from the routine of classroom learning, bringing them together in a new environment here in Wisconsin.

The goals of the Outdoor Education program are to reinforce topics learned in the classroom. For example:

  • Discussing how trees produce energy, then walking through the woods on our property to look at a variety of trees and discuss differences.
  • Reinforcing lessons of Adaptation and Adaptive Traits, by visiting our beaver lodge and by researching our aquatic habitats to see what’s living there.
  • Developing an appreciation for biodiversity, by spending time in our woods, learning the names of the types of trees and animals in our woods, and how they relate to one another – and seeing this relationship first-hand.
  • Learning about pesticides in the food chain, and the transfer of energy from primary consumers to secondary consumers, by playing a large group game called Predator Prey.
