By Sam Sterling, Kallah Rosh Eidah
And just like that Kallah Bet is here. Opening Day provided us beautiful weather and tons of fun. After playing some “ice breakers” the chanichim (campers) were split into their tzrifim (cabins) and had a great lunch of hot dogs, potato chips and coleslaw. The kids then headed to their respective areas and we had a discussion on respect and how we should live on a community.
It was then time to unpack. With the help of the madrichim (counselors), the kids organized and prepared their tzrifim. This session the tzrifim are named after hand motions. With names like A-Ok, Rock, Paper, Scissors and Fist Bump, the kids are having lots of fun talking about their homes for the next two weeks. Another exciting part of camp so far has been the chugims (electives) that the kids signed up for on the first day. The kids can choose from sports, dance, drama, teva (nature), music, art, photography and filmmaking. For many kids these activities tend to be one of the highlights.
Another highlight of the summer for many kids is swimming. In Kallah, we alternate between going to the lake and the pool every other day. This gives the kids opportunities to both receive instructive swim lessons and do fun camp activities like kayaking.
The first few days of Kallah have been busy and fun, and the next few days promise to be just as fun. With Face Paint Friday and Shabbat just around the corner, the kids are about to experience some of camp’s best traditions.
