Here are a few words from our s’ganim:

Gesher- Jami Goldberg

Hi! My name is Jami Goldberg and I am so excited to be S’ganit of Gesher this summer! I am from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, but I spend my school year in Bloomington, IN. Next year, I will be a junior at Indiana University where I study Human Resource Management. This will be my 11th summer at OSRUI, and 4th on staff.

I am so excited to be spending my summer in Gesher again! I am looking forward to celebrating Shabbat, swimming in the pool and lake, and climbing etgar! One of my favorite parts of Gesher is the focus on developing leadership throughout the session, while also forming lifelong friendships. I can’t wait to live in the horseshoe again and experience the strong kehila that each camper helps create!

Tzofim- Raya Seidman

My name is Raya and I am from Springfield Illinois. I will be starting my senior year at Indiana University, where I study Youth Development and Jewish Studies. I spent last semester studying at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel as a fellow on the Nachshon Project. This is my 12th summer at OSRUI and 5th year on staff, and I am so excited to be the Sgan of Tzofim this summer! Since I was 8 years old, camp has been what I look forward to all year and a place I call home. As I pack up my car to head to camp (in roughly 10 minutes!!!) I look forward to meeting all of my campers! Hanging out and getting to know my campers is my favorite part of camp because I always learn so much from them. My favorite part of the week at camp is Shabbat because I am love to sing at Shabbat Shira with all of the song leaders and the with the whole camp!

Well my car is packed and ready to go, I’ll see you soon OSRUI!!!

Tiferet- Leah Sherin

Hi! My name is Leah Sherin and I am so exited to be back at OSRUI this summer as Tiferet S’ganit! I am from Wilmette, IL, and during the school year I attend Brandeis University and study Sociology and Judaic Studies. This will be my 10th summer at camp at 4th summer on staff. I love doing all kinds of art both inside and outside of camp, especially theater and music. I am also looking forward to doing some songleading throughout the summer and during my favorite part of the week, Shabbat Shira!

There is so much about Tiferet that makes it special, but one thing I love is that the campers bring so much talent and passion for their art, and they also come with a drive to learn and grow as both artists and Jewish people. Each year we find new, creative ways to nurture individual artists while building a strong kehilah (community), and I cannot wait to build our unique kehilah with all of the fun and talented campers coming this summer!

Chalutzim- Lee Naftali

This will be my second summer at OSRUI, last year I was a madricha in Chalutzim and this year I am thrilled to be back as Sganit.

The summer I spent in Chalutzim was an amazing experience that it is hard for me to describe in words.  In just few weeks I managed to form strong connections with my Chanichim, learned about the jewish-american culture and made lots of new friends- and all of that- in Hebrew !!!

The special bond I created affected me deeply and as soon as I got back to Israel I started working at Alexander Muss High School in Israel where I had a wonderful time being a madricha for both American and Australian youth. Working with these groups encouraged me to learn more about the Jews in the diaspora, the history of the Jewish people, about Zionism, Judaism and Israel. As part of my job I traveled all over Israel and took many pictures capturing my journey in Instagram by the hashtag

ארץ ישראל של לי#

Which means in Hebrew – my land of Israel or, Lee’s land of Israel.  The idea came from singing this song in Chalutzim.

Chalutzim is the best eidah!!! The co-operation between the Israeli and American staff, learning about Israel and the privilege of speaking Hebrew, the langue of the Jewish people for over 2000 years- makes our summer experience deeper, better and much more real.

I am so excited to be back and can’t wait to start the summer!

Avodah-Anna Cohen

When I first started going to camp I did it because my dad happened to be faculty for Chalutzim and my two big brothers were campers as well. It also helped that nearly all my cousins were on staff or in the unit with me. As time went on I realized that I wasn’t going because my big brothers were going but because I created my own community at camp. Each summer was like coming home to my summer family that I would create memories of a lifetime with. I was a camper for eight summers and started my staff career at camp as an Avodahnik. I got down and dirty with my friends as we tried to give back to camp by making it cleaner. It was hard work but it paid off when we saw campers walk by and shout “Todah Rabah Avodah!”. Since Avodah I have continued to come back and work on staff in various places on camp; Etgar (climbing tower), Moshavah, and now finally as S’ganit of Avodah. I am very excited to work with the new Avodahniks and watch them share the same experiences I once had.

Outside of camp I study environmental science at the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk!), I’ll be a senior this fall and am anxiously preparing for graduation. I love to spend my weekends camping and rock climbing with the KU Rock Climbing Club. I am child three out of four (two big brothers and a little sister) and am from Deerfield, IL.

I am so excited for this summer to begin!
