The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) Biennial this past week in Boston was a non-stop experience, filled with informative, inspiring, and entertaining moments. As the chair of the OSRUI Board and member of Temple Sholom, I was pleased to attend and participate in the week. In addition to Keynote speakers – Reverend William Barber and Senator Elizabeth Warren – there were over 500 experts presenting on an array of topics in 160 sessions of interest and learning. The overall theme was Reimagining Jewish Life, which led to a significant focus on Social Action and Social Justice topics.

As my first Biennial experience, it was often difficult to choose from often over 25 simultaneous sessions of interest. In many respects, the Biennial felt like summer camp (for adults), with an incredible amount of music, study, song, and laughter.  OSRUI was well represented by staff members: Solly, Susan, Albert, Alex, and of course Paula and Jerry.  There was time well spent honoring the Kayes at a special Youth Division Luncheon and at Shabbat morning services, with nearly 6000 people in attendance.  Also representing the OSRUI community was Rabbi Leora Kaye who helped create many of the fantastic presentations on and off the stage as URJ Director of Program.

In 2019, Chicago will be the Biennial host city (December 11-15).  It will certainly be enjoyable to have this event in our home town, giving us many more chances to participate. I look forward to seeing many people from the OSRUI community at the next Biennial!
