by Libby Fisher, Communications Manager

If you’ve been following along with our blog and social media this summer, you’ve probably noticed that we use a lot of Ivrit (Hebrew)! Ivrit is a huge part of our culture here at OSRUI, and it’s one of the many ways we experience Judaism every day. Our chanichim (campers) learn Ivrit words for many people and places around camp, as well as words for daily activities and basic conversational phrases! Here’s a quick guide to some of the many words we use each day at camp!

Eidah – unit

Chanichim – campers

Madrichim – counselors

Tzevet – staff

Segel – faculty (the rabbis, cantors, and educators who join our eidot)

S’chiya – swimming

Agam – lake

Breicha – pool

Chadar Ochel – dining hall

Mirpeset – porch

Chugim – daily elective activities

Etgar – literally, this word means “challenge”, and it’s also the name of our climbing tower

Aruchat Boker/Tzohorayim/Erev – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

M’nucha – rest time

Miklachot – showers

Shira – song session
