Every once in a while, we like to give a shout out to the people who make up our camp community. Without all of you, OSRUI would not be the magical place we all know it to be! We are excited to share how the Stein Family (Brad, Abra, Aviva, Danya and Liana) got connected to OSRUI and why they became donors.

The Stein Family’s RV trip to OSRUI – Summer 2021

QUESTION: Tell us about yourself!

ABRA: I grew up in Schaumburg, IL and went to Beth Tikvah Congregation in Hoffman Estates. I was a camper from 1989-1994, counselor from 1995-1997 and again in 1999. My daughters, Aviva and Danya, have been campers at OSRUI since 2018.

QUESTION: Your family now lives outside of the Midwest – why did you decide to send your kids to OSRUI as campers?

ABRA: I live in the San Francisco Bay area and there was never a doubt that we would send our kids to OSRUI (fun fact: we love camp so much that we even drove an RV across the country before camp in 2021!) We love the supportive Jewish community that camp offers and still have many friends that also send their kids to camp. I think it is great for kids to experience others from a different part of the country.

QUESTION: How has camp impacted you and the life of your family?

ABRA: Camp is a very special place. I tear up every time we drive down Ski Slide (it used to be down Lac La Belle but you get the picture!). As a kid, camp was a place where I knew people would be Jewish. Growing up, there were not that many Jewish kids at school, so it was comforting to be surrounded by Jewish kids in a fun Jewish community. Camp (and my grandmother) really taught me to be proud of my Jewish heritage and OSRUI really helped foster my Jewish identity.

QUESTION: Your family gives back to camp as volunteers and donors. Your dad recently volunteered at the Avodah for Adults weekend, and you greeted parents at drop off this year. Why is this important to you both?

ABRA: Giving back to camp is so important to us as a family – we want to continue to meet Jewish families that are experiencing camp for the first time or the 100th time. We hope to inspire the same love of OSRUI, so camp is always there for our kids and for generations to come.
