OSRUI’s staff is one of the reasons camp is so much fun throughout the summer! Each staff member contributes to the camp community and works towards creating an unforgettable summer for each camper that walks through the gates. Below are the positions that make up this staff. General description for all OSRUI staff members
In addition to the various specific tasks assigned to each member of the OSRUI staff, there are certain expectations and responsibilities that are required of all staff members, regardless of their duties. All staff members are expected to satisfy the qualifications and fulfill the responsibilities outlined below.
Qualifications:
- Desire and ability to work with children in a camp setting
- Able to balance the needs of campers, camp, and themselves
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance
- Willingness to adapt behaviors as necessary to continue growing in their position and role in camp
- Be of good character, integrity, and adaptability
- Exceptional communication skills with both staff and campers
- Well-developed sense of responsibility, good judgment, and common sense
- Be an adult role model of how to live responsibly and maturely
- Understand the potential of young children
- The ability to maintain the stamina and endurance needed to succeed in an immersive camp environment
- Ability to help campers develop Jewishly by being a positive Jewish role model
Responsibilities:
- Have fun!
- Be responsible for the needs of the campers, your fellow staff members, and yourself

- Support your fellow staff members and have a positive attitude
- Maintain strong lines of communication with all other staff members including formal and informal evaluations with your supervisor

Madrichim (Cabin/Tent Counselors)
Supervisor: Unit Head
Qualifications:
- Basic understanding of child development concepts
- Ability to communicate with both campers and peers
- Demonstrate maturity
- Ability to give and accept guidance and support
- A willingness and ability to ask for help
- Ability to assist in activities, both leading and supporting
- Be able to work with a variety of staff members and campers in a professional manner at all times
Responsibilities:
- Directly responsible for all campers living in assigned cabin or tent, which includes day-to-day involvement with campers and teaching of camp rules, policies, and traditions
- Help every camper make friends, become acclimated to life at OSRUI, and grow towards their potential while becoming part of the camp community
- Responsible for the health, safety, and happiness of all campers at all times
- Ensure campers exercise good hygiene and health practices. Notify appropriate staff members of concerns
- Help campers keep track of belongings
- Directly responsible for cleanliness of the cabin or tent
- Participate regularly and enthusiastically in all programming
- Teach or assist in unit and elective activities; always be an active participant
- Plan and lead cabin/tent activities
- Take an active role in evening programs and other unit-based programs
- Attend in-camp training sessions and staff meetings as required
- Be familiar with all emergency procedures and first aid
Please note: all cabin or tent counselors live in a bunk with the campers they are supervising
S'ganim (Assistant Unit Heads)
Supervisor: Unit Head
In addition to all qualifications and responsibilities of a counselor, a S’gan must abide by the following.
Qualifications:
- Evidence of capacity for leadership and developed leadership skills
- A dedicated staff member who is eager to take on further leadership responsibilities within camp
- Possess leadership skills necessary to motivate, support, and guide other Unit Staff
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a role model for the rest of the Unit Staff, as well as be a direct support to the Rosh Eidah
- Assist in the day-to-day operations of the unit, as directed by the Unit Head
- Support the implementation of camp policies
- Act as the first point of contact for staff concerns. Provide coaching and mentorship to staff regarding challenges in the Unit and opportunities for growth
- Praise and recognize staff for work well done and going above and beyond expectations. Develop new and innovative ways of recognizing staff in your Unit
- Coach unit staff on performance issues, as directed by the Unit Head
- Know the names of all the campers and staff in the unit and recognize their needs

Rashei Pe'ulah (Program Heads)
Supervisor: Unit Head
Rashei Pe’ulah have the following qualifications and responsibilities in addition to the those of a unit counselor.
Qualifications:
- Evidence of capacity for leadership and developed leadership skills
- A dedicated staff member who is eager to take on further leadership responsibilities within camp
- Possess creativity to develop and implement innovative programs in their Unit
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a role model for the rest of the Unit Staff, as well as be the direct support to the Rosh Eidah on programming matters
- Directly responsible for planning, preparation, and implementation of for assigned unit
- Directly responsible for consistently having unit’s program supply requisitions turned in
- Whenever possible, incorporate unit staff members in program planning and leadership
- Attend twice weekly cohort meetings with a member of the year-round team to ensure unique and exciting programming
- Facilitate meaningful activities during eidah time, transition periods, and approved madrichugim
- Develop nighttime bunk bonding programs that establish a sense of unity and community
- Support the programming of prominent camp events as determined by the year-round team and the needs of the particular Unit

Rashei Eidot (Unit heads)
Supervisor: Assistant or Associate Director
Qualifications:
- Evidence of leadership skill and capacity
- Strong background and experience in camping and/or related fields
- Basic understanding of child and adolescent development concepts
- Ability to creatively plan and schedule programs and activities, and to maximize the skills & talents of staff members under your direct and indirect supervision
- Ability to give and take constructive criticism
- Must be a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision
- Must have demonstrated successful leadership skills and the ability to motivate, manage, and counsel
- Previous OSRUI experience preferred
- College graduate (or equivalent age) preferred
Responsibilities:
- Attend Unit Head and other supervisory meetings (beginning in January)
- Help formulate, implement, and support camp policies
- Oversee the planning, preparation, and implementation of all programming for assigned unit
- Whenever possible, incorporate unit staff members in program planning and leadership
- Manage all site and supply arrangements
- Coordinate activities of cabins or tents in the unit: Erev Tzrif/Ohel, staff days off, unit schedules, etc.
- Act as a role model for staff including being present within the unit. Be the counselor’s support and assist staff with problems and questions
- Serve as the primary supervisor for unit staff, regularly evaluating the performance of staff
- Act on behalf of unit for issues involving the camp community
- Lead daily unit staff meetings
- Be directly involved and participate with all campers and staff in the daily program
- Communicate with the Camp Director, Associate, and Assistant Directors on key matters

Moomchim (Specialists)
Supervisor: Head Specialist or Assistant/Associate Director
These positions include aquatics, recreation, horseback riding, teva (nature), ropes, arts, theatre, science, music and Hebrew Center.
These positions help the Head Specialist with creation of lessons plans, site maintenance, and supporting staff leading activities for campers. Specialists should have prior knowledge or experience in their specialty area.
Qualifications:
- Skill and ability in working with children.
- Ability to communicate effectively with campers and fellow staff
- Ability to serve as a role model for all campers
- Ability to accept guidance and support
- A willingness and ability to ask for help
- Training and experience commensurate with needs of specialty position
- When required, hold relevant certifications in activity area
- Strong enthusiasm for and broad-based knowledge of the specialty
- Ability to follow defined teaching requirements, developing own methods of presentation to campers
Responsibilities:
- Develop the necessary lesson plans and rain plans prior to campers’ arrival at camp. Share lesson plans in advance with supervisor and camp leadership team.
- Set up for and break down from all activity periods.
- Assist in coordination of activities for all age groups, as assigned by the Head Specialist, as scheduled for each unit.
- Maintain a safe and clean activity area
- Assist in all activity areas within your specialty
- Work with Avodah interns as appropriate
- Act as general resource for other Camp activities relating to your specialty
- Participate in other Camp programming as assigned
- Exercise good judgment and safety consciousness at all times. Act as role-model for safety with campers
- Maintain facilities and supplies necessary for assigned specialty in good condition
- Attend in-camp training sessions and staff meetings as required
Please note: Most specialists live in a bunk with campers and are part of an eidah staff team, and all specialists are expected to contribute to night coverage and general supervision needs.
Rashei T'chumim (Lead Specialists)
Supervisor: Assistant or Associate Director
There will be Lead Specialists for the following areas of camp: Arts, Intensives, Recreation, Horseback Riding, Etgar, Aquatics, and Hebrew. They will coordinate, schedule, and supervise their respective specialty and the site associated with their area.
Qualifications:
- Evidence of leadership skill and capacity
- Strong background and experience in camping
- Strong background and experience in your specific area of supervision
- Desire and ability to work with children and adults in Camp setting
- Ability to creatively plan and schedule programs and activities with maximum efficiency, and to maximize the skills and talents of staff members
- Ability to give and take constructive criticism
- Must be a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision
- Must have demonstrated successful leadership skills and the ability to motivate, manage, and counsel
- Previous OSRUI experience preferred
- College graduate (or equivalent level of experience) preferred
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the preparation and submission of required materials for your area each week, including supply requisitions, lesson plans, and rain plans for all activities
- Oversee and execute the planning, preparation, and implementation of all programs for assigned specialty; serve as the creative force for your programs
- Coordinate with madrichim and rashei eidot on the execution of programs for your specialty
- Supervise and engage Avodah interns as appropriate
- Manage all site and supply arrangements, including having a clean and organized site
- Coordinate activities of all groups participating in your specialty’s activities at a given time: allocation of space, staff, etc.
- Coach staff in the effective implementation of programming. Address questions and support staff in managing challenges
- Regularly evaluate the performance of staff members whom you supervise, following the policies of staff evaluation
- Act on behalf of your specialty on issues involving the camp community
- Engage in leadership meetings with the Camp Director, Associate Director, and Assistant Directors as requested and act as a liaison between the year-round team and specialty staff
- Be an advocate for camp-wide policy.

Drivers
Supervisor: Business Manager
Qualifications:
- Possess a valid Driver’s License (International Driver’s License if from outside the United States)
- Ability to communicate with others and abide by all rules and policies
- Experience in driving for long periods of time in unknown areas
- Be on call to drive at any time, for any purpose (Drivers who live in camp)
- Be available throughout the summer, as needed (Drivers who are hourly employees)
Responsibilities:
- Maintain clean and safe camp vehicles
- Be the primary camp driver both in camp and out of camp for all driving needs
- Manage a daily schedule in partnership with the Business and Operations Associate to ensure efficient partnership
- Drive in a safe manner at all times
Please note: If the Driver is in residence at camp, they will live in staff housing.
Camp Care Team
Supervisor: Community Care Manager
Qualifications:
- Understand camper and staff needs
- Strong communication skills with campers, staff, and parents
- Extensive knowledge of social, behavioral and developmental issues with children and adolescents
- Experience working with young people
- Social work/Psychology or equivalent experience preferred
Responsibilities:
- Support the unit heads and counselors in their work with campers, under the direction of the Camp Care Director. This includes discipline problems, moments of sadness, interpersonal issues, and adjusting to the camp environment
- Work with campers who have been identified by special needs committee along with their counselors and unit head to proactively manage issues and create a positive camp environment Ensure consistent communication to all necessary parties including the Director, Associate Director, Assistant Director, Unit Heads, Health Center staff, and others
- Be present in camper units daily, including staff meetings, to support unit heads and staff
- Advise program areas and specialists on how to accommodate individual camper needs in different activities
- Participate in the process of parent phone calls for camper care related issues
- Participate in the documentation of camper care issues, parent phone calls and camper interactions that take place during the summer
- Participate in meetings to update Camp Care Director on camper issues daily
- Serve as a positive role model for staff
Nurses
Supervisor: Camp Physician (clinical matters) / Health Center Administrator (scheduling)
Qualifications:
- Candidates must be licensed in Wisconsin, or able to obtain a single-state endorsement RN license in Wisconsin
- Strong communication skills
- Compassionate approach to supporting children in a camp environment
Responsibilities:
- Administer routine medications to campers in multiple practice environments (health center, outdoors, etc.)
- Apply basic first aid to campers or staff
- Clinical assessment of campers and staff members during daily morning clinic, in partnership with camp physician
- Contribute to ongoing organization and planning in the Health Center, including packing medications for upcoming trips, preparing for new camp sessions, coordination with physician and pharmacy for any newly ordered medications, monitoring supplies, etc.
- Manage and support unit Medics and pass out all medication, including OTC
- Manage parent communication in partnership with the Camp Care Director (Health Center Administrator)
- Manage health center facility including supplies, staff scheduling, files, etc. (Health Center Administrator)
